Highlights of Internet resources development in Viet Nam in 2020

On December 2020, VNNIC published Report on Viet Nam Internet Resources 2020. The year 2020 would have been considered a pivotal year when VNNIC focused on building digital platforms and services, to adapt the digital trend in the world and to promote the new generation of Internet with the spirit of “Internet for all”. Pursuing this new vision, VNNIC has gained quite a number of achievements in the development of Internet resources, ensuring Internet resources ready for 5G, IoT and smart city development in the future.

The growth rate of “.vn” domain higher than the average number of the whole domain name industry in Asia Pacific region

According to Report on Internet resources 2020, even other countries faced country code domain names with negative growth or insignificant positive growth, “.vn” still recorded a positive growth rate, higher than the average number of the whole domain name industry in Asia Pacific region.

By the end of October 2020, the total number of “.vn” cumulative domain names reached 514,632 domains, an increase of 2.1% compared to the end of 2019. Accordingly, “.vn” lead position in the number of ccTLD in Southeast Asia, reaching the top 10 ccTLDs and 44th place in the world in largest number of registration. This result not only confirms the position of “.vn” ccTLD on the world domain map but also represents a symbol of an integrated Viet Nam into global Internet, beside an important resource for Viet Nam to be ready for the digital transformation.

The year 2020 also marked a significant shift in Viet Nam’s domain market. For the first time, “.vn” passed gTLDs and other ccTLDs to lead the industry in Viet Nam with 50.6% of total registrations.

Another noticeable difference domain market share in 2020 was the fact that the number of “.vn” new registration by individual customers accounted for a larger share (62.87%) while it was lower almost twice compared to the number of new registrations by organization registrants. By October 2020, amongst total of 514,632 “.vn” registrations, the number of “.vn” domain registered by individuals and organizations accounted for 51.03% and 48.97%, respectively. This trend would be consistent with the development of e-ecommerce and prospect for personalization on the Internet.

34 million people provided IPv6 services in Viet Nam

In Viet Nam, IPv6 is considered as digital resources for the development of Internet infrastructure since IPv6 enhanced innovations for future technologies like 5G and IoT. By October, 2020, the number of IPv6 addresses in Viet Nam reached 9,032 billion billion billion addresses. IPv6 adoption rate in Viet Nam continue to grow with 45.6%, ranking second place in ASEAN, 10th place in the world.  Viet Nam has 34 million people proved IPv6 services now. In 2020, VNNIC has supported government agencies to speed up their deployment of IPv6. There have been 3 Ministries, Branches and 32 Provinces, Cities issued their IPv6 deployment plan; amongst them 03 Ministries, Branches and 07 Provinces/Cities transited their internal and services networks to IPv6.

The Report also noted that, according to the National Digital Transformation Program by 2025, with orientations towards 2030, Viet Nam set the goal of transforming the entire Internet network into the new generation Internet protocal addressing (IPv6), shaping foundation for digital transformation. 

VNNIC deployed the first DNS Root server (F-Root) in Viet Nam

In July, 2020, VNNIC cooperated with ISC to install successfully the first DNS Root servers (F-Root) at VNIX in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. As a result, it helps to reduce the dependency on oversea Root servers. According to the report, they have seen a reduction in domain query response time by 5 at least 5 times, improving access speed of Internet services over “.vn” in Viet Nam, accordingly.

The first report on Vietnamese users’ Internet speed measurement by VNNIC Internet Speed

The Report also show the statistics on Vietnamese users’ Internet speed measurement by VNNIC Internet Speed for the first time. This free services is developed by VNNIC since late 2019 (https://i-speed.vn). In 2020, VNNIC worked with ISPs and relevant organizations in Viet Nam to deploy more 21 test servers at VNIX and ISPs’ networks with the aim to provide more comprehensive Internet speed data to community and encourage transparent Internet market in Viet Nam.

According to the Report, the average upload speed and download speed of Viet Nam Internet is 48.25 Mbps và 38.09 Mbps, respectively, higher than the average speed of the world in the same category.
