VNNIC publishes the Report on Viet Nam Internet Resources 2017 (22/12/2017)

On the occasion of “Internet Day 2017” on 22nd November 2017, Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) officially announced the publication of the Report on Viet Nam Internet Resources 2017. This publication also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Internet in Viet Nam with significant increase in new registrations of “.VN” domain names, IP addresses, Autonomous System Numbers (ASN), and bandwidth & traffic of Viet Nam national Internet Exchange (VNIX).

Since published for the first time in 2012, the Report on Viet Nam Internet Resources has become an annual publication which presented the significant growth of Internet resources in Viet Nam. Some highlights for year 2017 includes  the synchronization of the legal document system to empower the management and operation of “.VN” domain name transfer process. Registrants can now easily execute the sale and transfer the right of “.VN” domain names legally. By October 2017, 581 domain names are completely transfered by almost all domestic Registrars. Moreover, the new fee band stipulated by the Circular No.208/2016/TT-BTC dated 10th November 2016 by The Ministry of Finance has lowered the cost to use and the price of “.VN”, raising the commercial value of the domain names.

“.VN” ccTLD has kept the first position in the number of registered domains in the ASEAN region since 2011, as well as reaching the 7th place in Asia’s top 10 ccTLDs with highest nuber of registrations. Since the first “.VN” domain name “vista.gov.vn” was allocated on 1st December 1997, there was a significant jump in the cumulative number of “.VN” domain names (from 543 domain names in 2000 to 422,601 domain names by October 2017). This number has been growing consistently, even in the difficult periods of the economy.

2017 also witnessed the breakthrough of Vietnamese International Doman Names (IDN) with major changes in the fee schedule and adoption of ASCII “.VN” domain policies and management role. VNNIC established and operated the registration service managment system with Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) for the Vietnamese IDN under the ICANN Registry-Registrar model. This resulted in creating a competitive enviroment among the Registrars to provide better Quality of Service (QoS) for Vietnamese IDNs.

For Internet number resources, IP address in Viet Nam has increased remarkably for 20 years. The greatest achievement is the deployment of the new version of the basic Internet Protocol, IPv6, to replace IPv4 which is in the final stages of exhausting its unallocated address space. By October 2017, IPv6 adoption rate of Viet Nam reached about 10% (almost 4.3 million IPv6 users), standing at the third place in the ASEAN region (after Malaysia and Thailand), and fifth in Asia (after India, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand).
