Viet Nam National Internet eXchange Network Operators Group 2017

After the success of the 1st VNIX-NOG Conference in 2016, Viet Nam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) continued to hold the 2nd VNIX-NOG event on 25th August 2017 at Saigon Prince Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City, with the aim to connect VNIX members, update each other on their works and promote Internet development in Viet Nam.

The conference, organized as Network Operators Group which is a forum developed in many countries all over the world like JANOG, HKNOG, SGNOG, was well-participated by attendees from all the Viet Nam’s major ISPs joined with representatives of the Viet Nam Internet Association (VIA), the Internet Society (ISOC), APNIC, Google and BBIX. NETNAM sponsored the dual stack IPv4 and IPv6 network for the event.

The conference started with the opening speech by Nguyen Hong Thang – Deputy Director of VNNIC and brief presentation by Vu The Binh – General Secretary of VIA, which were followed by discussions about new technologies or protocols, current network and Internet-related issues and challenges.

Some highlights of the NOG event were interactively dicussed as: solutions for network secure; SDSN (Software Defined Secure Networks) to prevent malware/ransomeware attach; using JSNAP to automate network verifications and using VNIX to defend against DDoS attacks.

The other hot topic is undoubtly IPv6 deployment in Viet Nam. As some network statistis added by VNNIC, IPv6 traffic is negligible (only 0.1%) at VNIX. The point is addressing the objectives and following the roadmap which is annouced in Viet Nam’s National IPv6 Action Plan to ensure the stable opeartions of Internet in Viet Nam with IPv6-based technology. Follow up this topic, VNPT-NET’s representative presented the actions that VNPT had been undertaking to deploy IPv6 with satisfactory results: 100% of their mobile network is now IPv6 ready, nearly all of their leased line business such as Core PS (mobile), RAN (mobile) and some of them were implemeted dual stack – IPv4/v6 like IP Core Network, Metro Network and Access Network.

VNNIC representatives shared expreriences in resources management, DNS Operations and the major issues in using IP/ASN on the network. Presentations from APNIC and ISOC expanded people’s understanding and raised many questions. Mr. Thomas Harrison (APNIC) delivered speech about Whowas which is a resource history service at APNIC. Mr. Aftab Siddiqi (ISOC) provided an update on Internet Exchanges and Technology Trends where Internet Exchanges were located.

In conclusion, Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang indicated that VNIX-NOG is the first step to form VNNOG (Viet Nam Network Operators Group) that technical managers and staffs can share, update technical knowledge to promote the Internet construction, operation and management in Viet Nam. No dout that this non-profit forum becomes an annual event for all members. Presentations from the event are available at:
