VNNIC was the local host of the 86th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD 86)

From 17 to 20 September 2024, the 86th Meeting of the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association (APTLD 86) was held in Da Nang City, Viet Nam. The conference focused on discussions surrounding the implementation of the “Internet for All” strategy, reaffirming the crucial role of country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) and the Domain Name System (DNS) in the digital transformation era, and realizing cooperative commitments toward the shared goal of developing a safe, sustainable, and trusted Internet.

This was the second time that the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) had served as the local host of an APTLD Meeting. This year’s event brought together more than 150 delegates, including leaders, experts, and engineers from country code top-level domain (ccTLD) registries, regional and international Internet resource management organizations (such as ICANN and APNIC), as well as domain registrars and Internet enterprises across the Asia-Pacific region.

The Internet is the foundation of global social activity, fostering economic growth, encouraging innovation, connecting communities, and creating opportunities for billions of people around the world. In the digital era, the role of top-level domain management organizations in general, and country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) and Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructures in particular, has become increasingly important.

Domain names are key parameters that underpin almost all Internet activities and services. The DNS infrastructure is an essential component — often referred to as the “heart of the Internet” — that responds to domain and IP queries in virtually all online transactions, connections, and digital services.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Hong Thang, Director General of VNNIC, emphasized that achieving the goal of “Internet for All” requires all members to ensure that their infrastructure and Internet resource management policies meet the diverse needs of the digital future, while maintaining a safe, sustainable, and trusted Internet environment.

As Viet Nam’s national Internet center (NIC), VNNIC has consistently strived to develop and promote the use of the national domain name “.vn” for a wide range of purposes, supporting the digital presence of individuals, enterprises, and organizations nationwide.

The “.vn” domain name has become a symbol of trust, safety, and national identity in cyberspace, associated with the brands, activities, and reputation of Vietnamese businesses, organizations, and citizens.

Under the 2021–2025 strategy, the Program on Promoting and Supporting Reliable and Secure Online Presence for Individuals, Enterprises, and Business Households through the Use of Viet Nam’s National Domain Name “.vn”, issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications, VNNIC is implementing the initiative “Popularizing Viet Nam’s National Domain Name ‘.vn’ to Develop the Digital Economy and Digital Society”, aiming to achieve at least one million “.vn” domain names by 2025. At the same time, VNNIC continues to upgrade national Internet infrastructure, align with global Internet development trends, and deliver the best outcomes for the Vietnamese Internet ecosystem.

Mr.Nguyen Hong Thang, Director General of VNNIC, delivered the Opening Speech

Mr. Nguyen Quang Thanh, Director of the Da Nang Department of Information and Communications, expressed that Da Nang was honored to be selected as the host city for the APTLD 86 International Conference. In recent years, Da Nang City has achieved significant progress by actively adopting global digital transformation trends and advancing its smart city development initiatives.

The city currently ranks among the leading localities in Central and Central Highlands Viet Nam in the number of “.vn” domain names registered. Da Nang City will continue to align with the “Program on Online Presence Using Viet Nam’s National Domain Name ‘.vn’” issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications, supporting local citizens and enterprises in strengthening their online presence through services using the “.vn” domain name — ensuring that each business household and newly established enterprise owns a website using the “.vn” domain name.

Within the framework of the conference, VNNIC also carried out bilateral cooperation activities with international partners, including: the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Coordination Center for TLD .RU of the Russian Federation, as well as bilateral meetings with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) — the global authority for domain names and numbers — and other ccTLD management organizations in the region.

These activities further expanded and strengthened the effectiveness, role, and standing of Viet Nam’s National Internet Center (VNNIC) in international cooperation, enhancing the country’s position in the regional and global Internet community.
